Currently many investment transaction payees are at best non-descript, and at worst incorrect. Since they vary heavily by institution, it's difficult to determine a fix that would work across the board, but easy to allow users to derive better payees via the metadata from the API.
One of the most useful pieces of data for an investment transaction payee is the security name, which Plaid includes with other security details when retrieving investment transactions, but which is not currently placed into the saved transaction metadata. If the security details were matched and saved to each investment transaction, it would enable users to obtain the security name from the metadata and construct more useful payees through the API.
