I split my monthly mortgage payment into two parts: interest, categorized as an expense, and principal, categorized as a transfer and excluded from expense totals.
This makes sense from an accounting perspective: repaying principal reduces my debt rather than representing an expense. However, the full mortgage payment still leaves my bank account and reduces the money I have available that month.
For example, if my mortgage payment is €1,500, split into €300 interest and €1,200 principal, only €300 appears in my expense totals—even though I need to cover the full €1,500 from my monthly income.
I would love an optional monthly cash flow view, available alongside the existing expense view, that would:
Include expenses plus selected non-expense outflows, such as mortgage or other loan principal repayments.
Let users choose which transfer categories contribute to this view, independently of their expense classification.
Show total monthly outflows and income remaining after those outflows.
Count repayments only once, ignoring the corresponding credit on the loan account and avoiding double-counting ordinary internal transfers.
This would help answer two different questions: “How much did I spend this month?” and “How much of this month’s income is still available after my expenses and loan repayments?”
It would preserve accurate expense reporting while providing a clearer picture of monthly cash commitments.
