When transactions are grouped or split, hovering over the amount field in the Transactions table displays debits as positive and credit as negative in the breakdown. This is the default, regardless of whether you have the "Show debits as negative, credits as positive" preference enabled or disabled. If that preference option is enabled, the tooltip should be displaying debits as negative and credits as positive instead.
