Autocategorization changes the manually selected category when creating a transaction

I had to create about 15-20 transactions because of the poor support for BMO USA (another issue) and almost every time, I would select the category in the Add Transaction window and the system would change it to something wrong upon closing. This is significant because if you dont pay VERY close attention, you will end up with all your manually entered transaction misclassified.

Hey Denis Lacasse!
Thanks for writing in and happy to help here!
The most common culprit for this would be a rogue rule that is overriding the category selection every time. Could you please check the Category Rules page to confirm if there are any rules set up that may be automatically changing the category? You can click this link to view the Category Rules page: https://my.lunchmoney.app/rules?filter=category
You can also check the transaction's change history to see what caused the category change:
- Open the Transactions page
- Click the arrow to the right of the transaction row to open the Transaction Details panel on the right
- Scroll down to the I want to... section and click on "View change history", which should be the second last button in the list. You should then see a list of dated actions that took place.
Ps. You can disable the preference on the Settings page, to prevent new category rules from getting created (see screenshot).
Hope this helps! 😊

Din from Lunch Money Ydes, a rule did change it. But how can this rule have been created? There is no "If" condition? Maybe that is the bug. A rule should not exist, or enforced, without an IF condition.

Denis Lacasse: Thanks for the confirmation!
If automatically created, it would be as a result of the 'Auto-create rule when updating category' preference under on the Settings page. Did you have it enabled? You can disable it and that should prevent future rules from getting automatically created.
As for the IF condition, did you already delete the rule, or do you still have it so I can take a look and investigate?

Din from Lunch Money Sorry, already deleted. From your reaction, there is likely an edge condition in the auto rule creation. What I saw was a rule dialog with nothing in the If section and a Set Category value. I believe the priority was 11 but not sure. After I saw that, I scanned my list of rules and it was the only one like that.

Denis Lacasse: No worries, thanks for the information. I tried to reproduce this with no luck, yet I'll keep an eye out for this happening. I'm going to close the ticket here, yet if you do run into a similar issue again, please open an in-app support ticket and we'll investigate! :)
